Here are three lessons you should take the time to impart to your adult children.
1. Lock Up Even When You Are Home
Criminals generally prefer to break into homes when no one is there. However, there are some very bold criminals in this world that will break in even when everyone is at home. The best way to keep criminals out is to keep the doors locked at all time. Another thing you can do is review all the locking mechanisms when they move into their new home. Make sure that they know how to lock things up and that the locks are strong and secure. Door should have multiple locks including a deadbolt and doorknob lock. Windows should be doubly secured with a piece of wood set into the frame.
2. Be Careful What You Post On Social Media
Social media is a large part of a young adult’s life and many of our children want to share everything. Make sure that you instruct them on what not to share. Criminals troll social media looking for easy targets, so the less they share the better. Tell them to never share their location or that they’ve moved out and are living alone. Make sure they don’t show off their valuable possessions in pictures. Finally, make sure they never say when they are going on vacation. They can save the pictures until they get home.
3. Be Careful Who You Let In Your Home
You remember what it was like when you first moved out. The social gatherings, the parties, having your friends over to do all the stuff your parents wouldn’t let you do. Make sure they understand they should be selective about who they let into their new home. Even people they think are trustworthy may case the apartment to break in later.
