Modern Security Matters For Modern Schools
March 1st, 2019
The state of education, the facilities used, and even the students themselves in our Chico, CA have changed a lot. Education is in a state of constant change, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse, and that, unfortunately, also applies to the safety of the students that attend these schools.
Whether it’s an elementary school, or a college campus in Chico, CA today’s students are more at risk than at any point in American history. It’s no longer just a bully or drug dealers that students have to worry about. Teenagers with guns going on rampages are now a part of American culture, but it is the children we send to schools that must deal with the consequences. This is why now, more than ever, the idea of implementing effective security measures is important in our schools. It’s not just a matter of discouraging a fist fight, but trying to prevent multiple students from getting shot by one of their own. These security mechanisms—and practices—can make a huge difference in saving lives.
While schools need to have a large number of doors available for the beginning of classes, the end of the day, and for emergency evacuation purposes, the rest of the school day is not so critical. Access control systems, such as putting other doors on timers that prevent usage are important mechanisms for controlling how non-students get into schools.
With good access control, visitors can only come in through the main entrance during normal school hours, making it much easier to identify and monitor outside visitors.
Alarms are a fixture of every school in Chico, CA, and have been for decades. But beyond the fire alarms most of us are familiar with, schools should consider adding theft/burglar alarms for outside school hours. And, for the worst case scenarios, there should also be a distinct “crisis alarm” during the day for situations outside of a fire. Proper procedure during these periods is also critical to ensure more people remain safe.
Security cameras are another important element of modern school security. Judicious placement of security cameras can help police, should an active shooter event take place, as the security feed can be accessed by law enforcement to track both shooters and students. However, cameras placed around a school campus, such as in fields, entrances, and parking lots can help with both security against violence as well as deter against other criminal activity.
The presence of cameras can reduce bullying, as cameras can catch the action and no longer rely on witness accounts. They can help with truancy issues since now students leaving school grounds are caught on camera, and they can even prevent one of the more common issues, drug dealing, from being so frequent, as dealers don’t want to get caught on camera, which is good court evidence.
