Protecting Schools With Access Control And Security Cameras
September 30th, 2019
Sadly, it’s a scary time to be a schoolchild in America. Between the increase in bullying, incidents of both physical and sexual assault against students and staff, and the prevalence of mass shootings, we have to do everything we can to protect our Chico community schools. One of the best things we can do is install a comprehensive security system that provides both access control and surveillance footage.
How Access Control Can Protect Students
Access control is a type of security system that limits the access to buildings and rooms. Access control systems come in a variety of styles, but typically use identification cards, keycodes, and bluetooth signals in order to unlock and open a door. These are very valuable at schools because they can keep dangerous intruders out. The best strategy is to install access control at all entry points and vulnerable areas. Then during school hours, only allow entry from outside visitors through the front lobby. That way everyone that comes to the school has to check in before entering.
How Surveillance Systems Protect Students
The sad fact is, our educators are overloaded. Between overflowing classrooms and a variety of extra tasks, they simply can’t be everywhere at once. A surveillance system helps give school staff an extra set of eyes across the campus. This helps ensure that all student activity is being monitored, even when a teacher or administrator isn’t present. In a serious incident, like a school shooting, it can notify staff that an active shooter is on campus and where they are located. This can help emergency responders direct students and faculty to safety and lets law enforcement know exactly where the shooter is to capture them.
What Does School Safety Cost A Community?
We can’t put a price on our children’s safety. However, we still have to contend with the fact that most Chico schools are already underfunded. So trying to find the money for a security system in an already stretched budget can be a challenge for administrators. However, there are some ways to help pay for these systems. First, your school board should work with a security company that specializes in school security. They know exactly how to implement both access control systems and surveillance cameras within a constrained budget. Secondly, parents and administrators can work together to raise the money. Finally, there may be some cost savings involved, such as a decrease in the cost of premises liability.
As a community we have to address the dangers to our school students. Access control and surveillance cameras can go a long way to help. Furthermore, at Crime Free Living we understand how budget can be a factor. We work closely with Chico schools to help find ways to implement a security system without taking away from the budget needed to educate our children.
